Performers: Musicians and bands

Every year, people come forward to freely offer their talent to perform at the Fair, whether it’s music, singing, dance, drama, story-telling or Tai Chi. Here, we proudly present just a few of the latest and greatest performers to grace the Fair. There are many more amazing acts that we could not feature here, to whom we say ‘Thank You’ and ‘See you at the 2021 Fair!’

Please do click on the image or name of a performer in the sections below to find out more about them.

The videos give a taste of what you can see and hear on the day of the Fair. If you want to see more, try searching for ‘Mill Road Winter Fair’ on YouTube, where you can find 2019’s Shake Your Tail Feather stage, the pedal-powered Outspoken stage and much more.

You can also listen to music from a selection of our performers on our MRWF 2020 Spotify playlist.

Fresh and funky

The Brass Funkeys

The Brass Funkeys draw from the traditions of New Orleans with skilled musicianship, rolling from spirited second-line revelry to soulful jazz funeral marches and pumping brass-driven funk.

Colonel Spanky’s Love Ensemble

Cambridge’s favourite brass-fuelled 10-piece pop and funk band with an outlandish name! Promising singalongs, synchronised dancing and sexy sax solos – a real shindig!

The Balkanoes

The Balkanoes fuse Eastern European and Jewish folk music with a joyous energy to guarantee a Balkan bash of mammoth proportions.

Shake Your Tail Feather

7-piece funk and soul band guaranteed to get you dancing. And hosts of the funkiest stage at the Fair!

Mellow and melodic

David Youngs

Percussive acoustic guitar. ‘A shining example of acoustic guitar playing at its finest’ (Acoustic).

Holly Jean

Young singer-songwriter. Music is such a passion and she adores performing.

Dickon McCarthy

Intricate guitar techniques with ranging melodic vocals. Subtle and reflective to energetic.

Allotment is traditional independent alternative retrospective acoustic standing still dance music.

Quirky and cool

The Scissors

Swirling organ and primitive analogue synths, homemade ‘tronica combined with horrorshow guitars and melodic bass; 60s garage psych meets new wave in a retro future kaleidoscope.

Ember Rev

Ember Rev play original material and gig around Cambridge, almost all living in the Mill Road area.

The Misspent Ukes

A quirky five-piece band based in Cambridge. We play and sing music from a range of musical genres, all on the ukulele.

Jacqui and Geoff

Songs about life, love and snakes, alternating between delicately tugging at your heart-strings and ripping them out with ditties about stalkers, drinking and ageing Casanovas.

Big and bold

Arco Iris Samba Band

A community samba band based in Cambridge, dedicated to bringing the carnival sounds of Brazil to the local community, and beyond!

Cambridge Groove Orchestra

Community big band playing jazz arrangements from swing to funk. Many of us are local to the Mill Road area.

Jason and the Skagonauts

Ska’ed up versions of songs you’d not expect plus some punk and originals thrown in. A unique band with a unique twist. Powerful, danceable and fun.

Fruity Clave Samba Band

Small local samba band performing pieces that have Brazilian roots but also material we have written ourselves; providing a sunny carnival atmosphere.
